Jazz Playlist

A jazz playlist. What you might hear if I had my own late night, radio program. 

For this rainy evening session, a heavy emphasis on contemporary jazz or new jazz directions.

• Matthew Halsall - Music for a Dancing Mind / Song for Charlie ..... Trumpet player from England. He's become my favorite. He's the reason that I've been engaged lately in a trumpet obsession. He started it.

I do not pretend to know much about any of this music. I do though, find my senses and emotions responding in ways I can't describe, to these sounds. And I've felt for quite a few years that jazz has the most interesting song titles, inviting a closer listen.

• Gabor Szabo - Fire Dance ..... An oldie but goodie. From 1968.
• John Abercrombie - Excuse My Shoes
• Lisa Hilton - Adventures and Alibis
• Danny Green Trio - Katabasis ..... My first thought was: "The basketball player?" 😉

Several of these choices are recordings from the ECM Records label. 

End of the Day Playlist

Sunday evening random playlist, on the heels of a trip to check out the newest record store in town. That's two in a month. Both are small but both are something, which is a lot more than we had to this point.'

Sometimes you just feel like changing course. Not that there was anything wrong with the original direction, it's just that another path, long neglected, suddenly appeared and the temptation was just too great.

It was waiting on my doorstep a couple days ago. 

A vinyl release from 2012 and on the Anti recording label. Singer/Songwriter.

Since I'm not an accomplished reviewer of music....

.... I've had this thing lately of compiling playlists that make little or no sense in regard to a theme or just a loose reason other than total abstract and bizarre randomness as to why I am playing them together, I actually had an idea of making a playlist of songs that after original exposure, I refused to listen any further, but these days, have had a change of heart and can now tolerate or even possibly enjoy. (And I want to want to find the Kraftwerk listed below, on vinyl to add to my collection but it seems to be a rarity.)

BUT I CAN ONLY THINK OF THREE SONGS!! 

 Not much of a playlist is it. 

• The Box Tops - Cry Like a Baby .... Oldie from 1968.
• Kraftwerk - Autobahn ..... Another oldie but not quite as old. From the mid 1970's. 
• Zagar and Evans - In the Year 2525 ..... Also a late Sixties oldie. Try being a young teen, in the fields picking pole beans in August under a hot sun for three cents a pound and seemingly hearing this on the radio every fifteen minutes and just maybe you'll understand why I turned out the way I did.

Of course, this excludes holiday tunes. That would require much more space here.

Playlist For a Work Free Day

Another playlist without a theme or connecting thread, though it is the earliest hours of the 4th of July. Perhaps a playlist for a day off from work. 

• David Bromberg - The Main Street Moan
• David Saw - Don't Call .... I was pondering the opposite thought earlier this evening.
• Nuclear Valdez - Run Through the Fields ..... I was thumbing through vinyl records in an antique shop yesterday and I came across this record. I discovered the band/song many years ago on an compilation sampler disc put out by Columbia Records titled, 'Theodore.'
• Shawn Colvin - Shotgun Down the Avalanche .... Another song first heard on the Theodore collection.
• The Doc Watson Family - Your Long Journey
• Eliza Gilkyson - Beauty Way .... "Doe eyed kid and a little transistor, tuned into Wolfman Jack, I picked up a guitar heard the sirens whisper, and I never looked back."
• Drew Chadwick - I See Fire
• Griffin House - Yesterday Lies 
• Fiction Family - Not Sure .... I unearthed my ipod, chose shuffle, and this came up. When did I have time to put all that music on there?

Sunday Evening Playlist

There's no telling where this may lead. Another late night playlist of things I'm hearing, enabled by having to be no where except where I want to be, in the morning .... 

• Kurt Vile - Like Exploding Stones .... New one to my ears. Over seven minutes of far out and groovy, finger tapping melody.
• Todd Rundgren - I Saw the Light .... Seemed like a natural follow-up or pre-cursor to Kurt Vile.

Out of town yesterday, on a afternoon vinyl hunting excursion and I had a record in my hand, some late 1960's, psychedelic rock album .... Kind of a spendy title with a cool cover photo, which I put back in the bins, cleverly hiding it among titles from another genre and it dawns on me now that someone else will quickly stumble upon my hiding place, which I likely won't recall shall I return, but I wanted to do a little research prior to purchasing, but can't recall the band or the title. That's how I apparently roll at 66 ....and one day. 

• John Doe - The Golden State .... I picked up the album this is on at a public library used book sale several years ago for a dollar, came home and put it in the cd player and ran off to do something else without hitting play. A few weeks later, I was listening to whatever was in line before this on the cd changer, the album concluded and this album and song started. I was like: "What the hell is this?" (In a good way.)
• Dave Alvin - Nine Volt Heart .... "Plastic silver nine volt heart, you click it on and let the music start."
• Joseph Arthur - Mercedes .... 1996 I think. It was a Saturday night, I'm sure of. I put on the headphones at a Borders Books listening station with no idea what I was about to hear. 
• Kelly Joe Phelps - Crow's Nest .... I seem to return to this song every month.
• Mimicking Birds - Burning Stars
• The Jayhawks - Comeback Kids .... I've sung along enough times at home that they may as well have had me in the studio helping with backing vocals. 
• The Choir - In Loves Shadow .... From a youtube video that popped up on my homepage one day. A compilation of "Garage Rock" from the 1960's. Mostly stuff I've never heard before.
• Danny and the Counts - Ode to Wind .... From the same 60's Garage Rock compilation, mentioned above. A great discovery!! If I came across either of these on 45's vinyl, I'd snap them up in an instant. Might not even check the price.

From his 'Common Sense' album, which was my introduction to John Prine's music, which I purchased several centuries ago because Jackson Browne was singing background vocals on a song or two, totally unaware of what I was about to discover. R.I.P. John Prine.
• Peter Himmelman - 245th Peace Song
• Yonder Mountain String Band - Take A Chance On Me ..... Because I needed a bit of a mandolin fix at this moment in time.
• Kathryn Claire - Never Be ..... "There was just me, There was just you."
• Peter Gabriel - The Veil ….. I think this is a reason for album releases. Great song but for some reason when standing by itself as a single it tends to fade from memory over time when not part of a greater work that gets repeated listens.
• The Gourds - Lower 48 ….. Because apparently I needed a little Zydeco vibe in my evening as well.
